How to Design an SEO Strategy

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO,  is a key part of your online marketing strategy. Indeed, SEO helps search engines be able to find your website and content, placing it higher on a search result’s page. While there are many different tactics for enhancing SEO, it’s important to actually have a plan and a developed strategy rather than approaching SEO integration haphazardly. 1. Identify Themes and Topics

The very first thing that you should do is think about your brand, your audience, and what you offer, and then develop a variety of themes and topics around that. For example, if you’re a baker who owns a small bakery, you might be interested in marketing around the themes of birthday cakes, holiday desserts, wedding cakes, etc., or specific products, like your world-famous breakfast muffins. Jot down a list of all of the topics that are important to your brand and your audience. 

2. Brainstorm Keywords

The great thing about writing down topics is that these topics are, in themselves, keywords that should be integrated into your content. For example “birthday cakes” or “desserts” are stand-alone keywords that are strong and relevant. To improve your SEO efforts, though, you’ll always want to develop keyword phrases or long-tail keywords. If you’re located in Indiana, a keyword phrase might be “best birthday cakes in Indiana” or “local wedding cakes near Schererville.” 

3. Create Content

The next step is easy: create content! You can and should create both blog pages and content/landing pages that incorporate your keywords and keyword phrases/long-tail keywords. Try not to keyword stuff – that is, don’t use the keywords in a way that’s unnatural or forced. You can integrate them in a way that makes sense and feels natural. For example, if you want to use the phrase “best birthday cakes in Indiana,” you can write a blog titled, “Planning for your child’s perfect birthday,” and then incorporate your phrase. 

4. Integrate Best Practices

There are multiple best practices for content marketing that you’ll want to integrate alongside your SEO efforts for maximal effectiveness. For example, these might include blogging regularly, creating a link-building plan, utilizing images and graphics, and more. 

5. Monitor and Improve

It’s not enough to just do the above – you also want to monitor the effectiveness of your efforts and adjust your practices where needed.
