Hello, dear reader. Winston here, and I have just endured what can only be described as the biggest time-waster humans ever invented: fantasy football. That’s right. I, Winston, a dog of impeccable taste and superior instincts, voluntarily entered the chaotic, cutthroat world of fantasy sports. And let me tell you, it was lame.
It all started because everyone around me would not stop talking about their leagues. My humans, their friends, even the mail carrier apparently have a team. And you know me, dear reader. If there is a group activity happening and I am not a part of it, I simply cannot rest. Not to mention, everything instantly improves the moment I’m involved. So naturally, I had to demand a spot in the league, a gift to all participants, really. I pictured myself as some kind of gridiron genius, barking out plays, basking in glory. I thought it would be fun.
Boy, was I wrong.
The trouble began almost instantly, when it was time to name my team. Everyone else came up with these clever, punny names that made the humans laugh and nod approvingly. Me? I offered up “Winston’s Football Team.” Simple. Direct. To the point. I thought it had a certain elegant honesty to it. Instead, I got laughed at. Laughed at, dear reader! By people who named their teams things I still do not fully understand. I stood by my choice anyway. A dog has to have some dignity.
Then came the part where everybody kept asking how my “mock draft” was going. I did not even understand the assignment. Practice? For a pretend thing? I am a dog. I have actual priorities to attend to, like my seventeenth nap of the day and a very thorough sniffing of my own backside. Why would I waste precious butt-huffing time rehearsing for a draft that does not even count? Nobody could give me a satisfying answer, so I mostly just stared at my humans until they gave up explaining it.
When the real draft finally arrived, I panicked. I had absolutely no idea who to pick. So I did what any reasonable creature would do and followed my heart. I love it more than almost anything when a human throws a ball, so naturally I announced I would be drafting a quarterback in the first round. Seemed like a perfectly sound strategy to me. Everyone else in the league got oddly upset about this, and to this day I could not tell you why.
After that disaster, I tried to recover by actually looking at the list of available players, and that is when things got even more confusing. Are these real names? One of them was something like Kayshon Boutte, and I am fairly certain I still cannot spell it correctly. I read it three times and nearly fell off my chair. Cash. On. Booty. CASH ON BOOTY, dear reader. Now, I don’t know much about football, but I am fairly certain that should not be allowed. I looked around for someone, anyone, to share in my alarm, but apparently nobody else found this remotely concerning. Unbelievable. Naturally, I decided I could not, in good conscience, draft someone with such a suspicious name and needed a new plan entirely.
That is when I had what I thought was a brilliant idea. I would simply draft based on players’ team mascots. A foolproof plan, I thought, since I am an excellent judge of character when it comes to animals. Except when I actually looked through the options, there was not a single dog mascot anywhere to be found. Not one. Instead, I was surrounded by cats and birds, my two sworn enemies, staring back at me from nearly every single logo. I refused to draft a single player from a team represented by a cat. Some things are simply beneath me.
By the end of the whole ordeal, I was exhausted, confused, and thoroughly convinced that fantasy football is not the fun activity I believed it to be. Everyone takes this far more seriously than I anticipated, and frankly, the stress was not worth it. I came into this hoping for camaraderie and left feeling like I had failed a test I never agreed to take.
So here is my official verdict, dear reader. Fantasy football is a human problem, and humans are welcome to keep it. Next year, I am sitting this one out entirely. I will be on the couch, napping peacefully, blissfully unaware of anyone’s roster, while the rest of you argue about points and trades and whatever a “waiver wire” is. Some of us were simply born to watch the game, not manage it.
Until next time, dear reader, I truly hope you find a more worthwhile way to spend your precious time. Worshipping me, for instance, is a perfectly noble pursuit. As is gazing at me adoringly, showering me with belly rubs, and dedicating your every waking moment to my comfort and happiness. Just a thought.
With love and slight judgment (a lot of judgment),
Winston 🐾
