Dos and Don’ts of Asking for Google Reviews

Having reviews of your company online is a key part of staying relevant and building customer trust. One of the best places for reviews is Google—Google reviews have become a key part of a robust digital marketing strategy. If your business is working on getting more reviews, you may be curious about which tactics work best, what’s allowed, and what Google prohibits. Here’s everything you should know about the dos and don’ts of asking for Google reviews—

Google Reviews Best Practices: What You Can (and Should!) Do

Here’s a list of some best practices for getting Google reviews. If you have any questions, contact our digital marketing team at NUVEW directly.

  • Ask for reviews. One way that you can get reviews is simply by asking for them! And in most cases, asking for reviews is 100 percent allowed and encouraged by Google. When asking for reviews, it’s best to be honest—let your customers know that reviews are important to your business’s success.
  • Respond to reviews. Another great practice is responding to the reviews you get, including the negative ones. This lets customers know that you care about how they’re feeling; it’s also an indication that you’re not unfairly soliciting only positive reviews.
  • Highlight great reviews. If you do get a great review, don’t hesitate to highlight it on your socials or your website. Highlighting great reviews may help attract new customers, and may also help other customers feel comfortable in leaving a review.

Google Reviews: What You Can’t Do

While you’re welcome to do all of the above, be careful about breaching Google’s terms and engaging in prohibited practices. For example, you are not allowed to:

  • Solicit reviews from customers in bulk;
  • Prohibit customers from writing bad reviews or delete bad reviews;
  • Ask employees to post reviews; or
  • Pay customers for reviews.

If you have any questions about what’s allowed and what’s not, you can read Google’s review policy.
