Tips for Advertising Old, but Relevant, Content

As a business owner who maintains a website, you have probably heard a lot about the importance of posting content on a regular basis. As you consider the types of content that you can post, ranging from interviews with thought leaders in the industry to lists and how-to posts, the importance of evergreen content has surely come up. Evergreen content refers to content that is always relevant. For example, rather than a story about the latest and greatest piece of technology that was just released, an evergreen blog might focus on how to drive safely or the healthiest of foods – things that aren’t likely to change year-to-year.

That being said, one thing that businesses struggle with after posting evergreen content is how to keep the content relevant after it’s been posted. Indeed, how can old content be promoted in an effective way?

Know What You’re Writing and Posting

The first step in advertising evergreen content that was posted weeks, months, or years ago is to keep an inventory of all content that you write and post. This way, you won’t have to spend hours combing through your website archives looking for content that may be evergreen and relevant to your goal.

Use Social Media

Once you have identified all the different evergreen content you’ve posted in the past and may want to share in the future, the next step is ensuring that you’re primed to do so by getting your social media accounts up and running. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are all great sites for sharing content, old and new.

Be Consistent and Develop a Schedule

Next, rather than haphazardly posting content whenever you feel like it, it’s best to share evergreen content on a schedule. A “#TBT” (Throwback Thursday) hashtag accompanying an evergreen blog that you re-share on a Thursday can be very effective; however, you can share old content any day, so long as you’re doing it consistently.

Use Round-Ups, Most Popular, or Most Shared Sections to Gain Traction

A more discreet way of sharing evergreen content that’s dated is to curate lists and sections on your website and social media platforms that feature labels like, “Most Popular Posts,” “Most Shared,” or “Round-up of the 10 best blogs on…(XYZ).”
