Understanding Brand Story – What it Is and How to Create One

Most businesses aren’t overly focused on their marketing efforts; instead, they are committed to providing a great product or service and ensuring customer satisfaction. But doing good business only goes so far in today’s digital marketing age. Rather than just offering something that customers want and need, businesses today need to develop–and sell–their brand story in order to be successful. At NUVEW, our digital marketing team is ready to help you create and market your brand story to drive more leads and get more customers.

What Is a Brand Story?

A brand story doesn’t necessarily refer to a brand’s history or how a company came to be (although this can certainly be a part of a brand story); instead, a brand story refers to the narrative that you want your product, services, and overall business to tell about your values, as well as the feelings that customers associate with your brand. For example, the Disney brand may be one that many associate with the nostalgia of childhood. The Nike brand is often associated with sentiments of power, strength, and accomplishment.

So what does your brand say about you, and how do customers feel when they think about your brand?

How to Develop a Great Brand Story

Developing a brand story takes work, and is something that is cultivated over time. That being said, you can start creating your brand story today by considering the following:

  • What’s your why? The first thing you should ask yourself is why you are in business – what is the purpose of your company, what’s your mission, what are you motivated by, and why are you offering the products or services that you do?
  • What’s your what? The second thing that you should think about is your what – what are you doing to make sure that you meet the values established by your why? For example, if you are passionate about reducing your carbon footprint because you love the earth (your why), then you may be offering recycling services (your what).
  • What do you want customers to walk away with? When customers hear your brand name, what do you want them to think or feel? What story do you want to tell your customers?
  • Is your content reflecting your brand? Once you have an understanding of your why, your what, and your values, the next thing to think about is whether or not the content that you’re currently publishing is reflective of your brand and your brand story. If not, it’s time to update your website.
