Happy New Year! 2015 is now in the past and another new year is upon us. The holidays are in the rearview mirror and tax season is just about to begin. Each New Year gives people the opportunity to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. So let’s talk about some of the important things we’ve learned from 2015 about SEO. Of course a lot happened in the world of SEO over the last year. SEO is always changing and evolving and it will surely continue to change in 2016 as well. In fact, it will be interesting to see how the important happenings in 2015 will affect what takes in place in 2016. With that in mind, what were some of the major SEO lessons that hopefully everyone learned last year?
It used to be that when we wanted to search something we had to type in our search query ourselves. Thanks to Siri, Cortana, Google now and the like, we don’t have to type anymore. Digital search assistants are all the rage and more and more people are using these tools to help them search for just about everything they’re looking for. These digital search tools not only make hands-free search a possibility but they are also very helpful in narrowing searches and saving users time because they don’t have to scroll through so many possible links. It’s safe to say that search assistants are here to stay. Along those same lines, mobile search is not going anywhere, either. More and more people are searching while on the go and that appears to be a trend that is still growing.
While Google is still important in the search engine realm, which will likely never change, it doesn’t have as much clout as it used to. It used to be that “SEO-friendly” meant “Google-friendly,” but that is changing and many other search engines are gaining steam and becoming more relevant, which means website owners aren’t just catering to Google anymore. Yahoo, Bing and the like are growing their search engine presence and chances are that trend will continue in 2016. Another important lesson from 2015 is the shift in how content is indexed. Content is being stored and indexed in different ways, and the overall trend is moving toward worldwide accessibility.
The SEO landscape is full of surprises but if 2015 taught us anything it’s that the only constant in the industry is change. So what will 2016 bring?
