Have you paid close attention lately to your search engine results? If you have then perhaps you’ve noticed that Google has changed things up again. Those right-side ads on its search engine result pages are now gone. It used to be when you did a Google search paid ads would appear on the right hand side of the page in a separate box. However, earlier this year, Google announced that it would remove all right-hand-side ads on its results pages. The change makes for more room at the top and the bottom of the page for ads. Google determined that the click-through rate for side ads wasn’t high enough to justify their continued use.
This change might not seem like a big deal, but there are actually some significant implications for online marketers. First off, pay-per-click ads are likely going to get a lot more expensive. Because there will now be less room for paid ads, many marketers are going to be fighting to get the top three or four spots on the results page. That means their battles for certain keywords will end up driving up the cost per click. In other words, keywords that are already competitive will likely get even more competitive and in turn more expensive.
Another effect of having less side ads is that being on the first page will now become even more difficult, because most searches will bring up the top four paid ad search results. That means organic search results will keep getting bumped further down the page. In order to stay on top of the organic search results companies will have to compete even harder. That means it will be even more important to continually use relevant, long-tail keywords in order to remain competitive amongst the organic search results.
