The Basics of Creating an Email Newsletter

We’ve posted before about the benefits of email marketing for small- and medium-sized businesses in Indiana. One type of email marketing that can be advantageous for businesses is the creation of an email newsletter. While newsletters are a more demanding marketing project for a business–requiring a lot of time, creativity, and attention to detail–they can be very effective. To learn more about how to create an email newsletter, reach out to our content marketing team at NUVEW. In the meantime, here are some of the basics to know–

What Is an Email Newsletter?

First, some clarity: what exactly is an email newsletter? Rather than a single email that provides information about a single company update, product, or service, a newsletter is an email communication that provides an overview of all of the above – latest news, tips and tricks, industry insights, company updates, etc. Most of the time, newsletters are sent out on a regular–but much less frequent–basis when compared to standard marketing newsletters. For example, a newsletter may be sent out once a quarter, or four times a year.

Tips for Creating an Email Newsletter

Again, the first thing that you should realize about creating an email newsletter is that doing so is a major undertaking – you’ll need to plan content well in advance, create high-quality content, edit thoroughly, and include great images and graphics. Here are some tips for creating your newsletter:

  • Start gathering content early. Determine how often you’ll be posting your newsletter, and then plan out content in advance. Throughout the weeks or months leading up to your newsletter release, keep track of all “newsworthy” things that happen internally or relevant to your industry. If you have a specific goal for your newsletter, search for content that meets that goal.
  • Invest in design. Remember that most users don’t want to spend hours reading every single word in a newsletter; instead, they want to be able to get the main message of your newsletter quickly. This means that great design, format, layout, text, images, and graphics are all crucial. If you don’t have design skills yourself, find someone who does.
  • Don’t make your newsletter about promoting your business. One of the biggest mistakes that companies make is using a newsletter to promote the business rather than provide the consumer with valuable information. While some promotion is fine, the bulk of your newsletter should be about your audience, not your business.
