How to Know What Content Your Audience Wants

As your business develops content for its website, you probably already know that developing content that’s specific to and engaging for your audience is important – after all, what would be the point otherwise? However, while developing content that your audience wants is key for attracting target customers and increasing sales and leads, knowing what they want can be challenging. Here are some ways to start figuring out what content your audience wants when developing your content marketing strategy–

Just Ask

It sounds simple, but it’s very effective – just ask your audience what they want to learn more about or hear more about on your side. You can do this by creating a social media poll, asking for feedback through social media, or even posting an “ask me anything” prompt and then using the questions as blog or post topics on your website or social media. This strategy is particularly effective because you’ll not only be able to give your users exactly what they want, but you’ll also engage them throughout the entire process.

Check Out Your Competitors

Are there competitors in your industry who are running very effective websites? If so, one trick to figuring out what your audience wants is to see what your competitors are writing about (because their audience is your audience). Are customers responding to blogs, videos, infographics, etc.? And, if so, what is the theme of these content types?

Follow Your Customers

Your social media profiles are likely followed by dozens, if not hundreds or thousands, of your customers. By following your customers back, you can start to see what they’re posting about, what’s trending in their social circles, and where their interests lie. You can then use this as inspiration to create content that really hits home.

Get to Know Your Audience Better

One thing that businesses often forget to do when developing content is to actually take the time to get to know their audiences. For example, you may know that your primary customers are women ages 30-35. However, do you know if these women are married or single? Professionals? With children? Or what income bracket they fall into, as well as other demographics? By answering these questions, you’ll be able to home in on the things that really make your audience tick.
