You could use a free template, you could try to build a website yourself from scratch (although this is likely only possible if you are a web designer), or you can hire a digital marketing company. Many people choose the first option–using a free or low-cost template and taking the do-it-yourself approach. While this may be a great option for some, it’s not right for everyone. Here’s an overview of what you should know about the pros and cons of DIY website design–

The Pros

If you have some basic skills and some resolve to figure things out on your own, building your own website for your business can have some major benefits. The biggest benefit, of course, is that the DIY approach is always the lowest-cost option. If your business is on a budget, this may be tempting. 

Another benefit of a DIY approach is that if you have a creative bug in you that’s been dying to get out, building your own website can be a great place for creative expression. You also won’t have to worry about working with other people, and will have full control over the outcome.

The Cons

While starting your own website without the help of a professional may have some benefits, it’s not right for everyone. 

For example, while paying less for website design can be great, note that you’ll get what you pay for. It’s very unlikely that your DIY site will look the same as a professional site, which could mean losing out on customers. What’s more, while the basic free templates are a great starting place, you may end up paying more for upgrades and tools that aren’t available on the free version.

Another major con–and one of the biggest for business owners–is simply that creating a website is a big time commitment. If you don’t have the time to both build and maintain your site, it’s probably not worth doing it yourself.
