What Is SEO and How Does it Work?

What Is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. In a nutshell, search engine optimization is the process of optimizing a website so that search engines, such as Google, can find the website when a user searches a relevant term or keyword. For example, if a user searches, “Lawn care in Indiana,” Google’s algorithm will search for any websites that might be relevant to the user’s query. 

Why Does SEO Matter?

SEO is important because if a search engine can’t find your website, then guess what?  Your website won’t be displayed on its search results page. And if your website isn’t displayed on its search results page–and, realistically, on the first page–then chances are high that it will never be seen by a user. If a user can’t find your page, they can’t interact with your company to get information, find out where you’re located, or make a purchase. 

How to Improve Search Engine Optimization

Fortunately, even if you don’t know anything about SEO, there are a few things that your business can start doing right now, for free, that can help. These include:

  • Incorporate relevant keywords. Using keywords in your website’s content is essential. Keywords refer to the words or sets of words/phrases that are most relevant to your business and which a user may search. Using the example above “Lawn care,” is a keyword. If you’re a lawn care business not using the term “lawn care” throughout your website, you’re in trouble.
  • Keep content fresh. Another important thing for SEO is to keep content fresh. This means that even if you have static pages on a website, you’ll need to be regularly posting to a blog in order to help a search engine find your site.  You should also be posting to other sites, such as social media pages, regularly.
  • Add links. Google is looking for pages that contain high-quality and relevant information about a user’s query. One way to establish your website as an “authority,” then, is to link, and link to reputable sites. Developing and implementing an effective link-building strategy requires ongoing effort, but at the very least, you can start linking out to other reputable sites and sources of information.
