Understanding Backlinks

Understanding Backlinks

In order to stay relevant and connect with customers, brands should be publishing content on a fairly regular basis. While the content itself needs to be engaging in order to be effective, there are also some technical elements of the content to consider, too. For example, backlinks are an important part of your SEO strategy.

What Are Backlinks?

Backlinks may be a confusing term, but they’re quite simple in practice: backlinks are merely external links from a page or blog on your website to another organization/company. In other words, when one website links to another, a backlink is created.

Why Are Backlinks an Important Part of a Content Strategy?

As explained by Moz, backlinks are important because they represent a “vote of confidence” from one site to another, which can be helpful in ensuring search engines that content on a site is legitimate and worth linking to. Backlinks are also helpful because when used correctly, they can help you to establish your own content as legitimate because you are backing up any claims by sharing your sources. And finally, backlinks are important because when you link to other sites, you may earn links in return, helping search engines to find your content and move you to the top of the search results page. Cultivating backlinks from other sites is often referred to as “earning” backlinks.

Tips for Making a High-Quality Backlink

While backlinks are important, not all backlinks are equally valuable. In order for a backlink to be most effective, it should be:

  • Reputable, which means that you’re linking to an external site that Google already thinks is credible.
  • Relevant, which means that you’re linking to a page that integrates many of the same keywords that your content does and that the anchor text you’re linking to aligns with the content of the external page.
  • Natural, which may be the hardest element to satisfy, means that when you link to an external site, the link makes sense and fits seamlessly with the content. In other words, you’re linking because the content truly is relevant, and not because there’s a paid benefit in doing so.
